Daily writing prompt
Are you seeking security or adventure?

Good morning, whether you want it or not!

Time to make short work of today’s writing prompt – Am I seeking security or adventure? Well, way to single me out as a complete wuss but I’m sorry to admit that I’m inclined to lean towards security. I am not, at the moment at least, a particularly adventurous man. I do not do much sport aside from gym and jogging. I’m not at all competitive. I’m so economic I rarely go abroad on holiday. I don’t even go to many public events on account of being an eccentric wreck – that’s not to say I’m antisocial, far from it, but I can’t hack concerts, cinemas the like. I am about as bland as stale toast. You’ll not catch me skydiving, joining protests or robbing orphanages.

But I’m often bored as hell.

Thus, to use a ridiculously corny metaphor, I write myself adventures. I use the excitement I’ve glimpsed in fact and fiction as a kind of escape from being a wet blanket for a few moments – to make something truly thrilling, or at least a bungled attempt at such. If I can’t bring myself to do actually “exciting” things, at least by public image, I can create characters who will. It’s bloody pathetic, but I have no shame – I don’t intend to hoard all this fun to myself and don’t want to make it measly wish fulfillment. I want to be an author to bring excitement to other people like me. Bored, yet risk aversive. The quiet few.

Anyhoo, what do you make of it? I know no-one has even replied to my prompt posts yet and it might stay like that. Who cares? It’s always worth asking.

Have a good day!

  1. As writers and readers, we can find both adventure and security in writing new worlds and reading worlds created by others!

    1. That’s exactly what I’m getting at! It’s about striking a good balance, isn’t it?
