Oi oi oi!
Hope we’ve all had a good morning – might as well write another insipid answer to another daily prompt to keep my writing muscles (E.g. handies) flexible. The flavour of the day is “What motivates you”?
Now, it’s not easy to admit to what our motivations really are. It sounds all well and good to say that you’re divinely inspired or want to make people happy, but that is sadly an idealised version of what we want our motivation to be. That’s not to say that our real drive to do things is always selfish or greedy, but rather it’s actually pretty hard to nail it down – motivations for a project can vary dramatically over time, depending on your mood and means. One moment you could be writing a story for fun but, as time drags on and you begin to get sick of it, you could find yourself rushing it just to liberate yourself from writing any more of it.
To find a singular motive for the entirety of your existance is of course going to be really bloody hard – it’s not like we’re only going to do one thing all our lives. Thus, I think it’s best if I stick to my motivations for writing my Novel for this task. List time! (Whoopee!)
- For Fun (I like designing characters and cultures.)
- Slight monetary interest (I will need a job to get by in life)
- For entertainment (I genuinely, perhaps misguidedly, think people might like the designs I’m making for my narrative.
- As a distraction from more useless habits (e.g. browsing social media, daydreaming and videogaming.)
- To spite writing styles I’m not really fond of. (Looking at you, Game of thrones clones/Colleen Hoover!)
- For self confidence (I need to do something worthy for society, otherwise I’m just being useless)
- To raise money for environmental charities (Don’t worry, I won’t get too preachy on the matter in the novel itself – again, I just want to do my part for people)
- To make my family proud. (Soppy, but true!)
This list is open ended – there are many more reasons I could mention but I can’t be arsed right now. What motivates your writing? I’m sure I’ll find a lot of your responses about wordpress, so don’t feel pressured to comment on this post if you too can’t be arsed!
Either or, have a nice day!
